LE CAFÈ GOURMAND
Publication: Indonesia Design Magazine — 2014 Collection Edition, Restaurant
Le Café Gourmand is a 283 m² café renovation in Jakarta, documented as a 2014 gastronomy project. The presentation focuses on the finished interior atmosphere, with the café organised around a prominent service counter and a combination of dining and lounge seating.
Le Café Gourmand brings the spirit of contemporary French café culture into an inviting urban setting. Following a successful presence in Surabaya, the café introduces its distinctive gastronomic experience to Jakarta, combining French-inspired pastries, cakes, and ice cream with expertly prepared coffee, tea, and chocolate.
Conceived as more than a place to dine, the café offers a setting for people to gather, unwind, and enjoy the finer details of everyday life. The design embraces an artistic approach to hospitality, creating an atmosphere where culinary craftsmanship and visual expression become part of a unified experience.
Art, Gastronomy & Spatial Identity
The interior takes inspiration from the character of an atelier—a place where creativity, craftsmanship, and individual expression come together. Rather than relying solely on conventional café aesthetics, the design establishes a distinctive identity through the interplay of artistic elements, graphic expression, and carefully composed interior details.
A prominent illustrated wall becomes a visual focal point, setting the tone for the space while reinforcing its creative character. Combined with the café's display of colourful waffle cones and carefully presented products, these elements create a setting that feels expressive, informal, and memorable.
Materiality & Atmosphere
The interior balances the warmth of a contemporary gathering space with the visual richness of an artistic environment. Dark wall surfaces provide a backdrop for expressive graphics, while warm timber tones and carefully positioned lighting introduce depth and intimacy. The contrast allows selected objects, products, and decorative elements to stand out without overwhelming the overall composition.
This approach creates a relaxed yet distinctive atmosphere, encouraging visitors to experience the café not only through its food and beverages, but also through its surrounding visual details.
A Collaborative Design Experience
The project reflects a collaborative approach to interior design, bringing together seven designers and artists from different creative disciplines. Their contributions form a layered interior identity in which gastronomy, graphic art, and spatial composition complement one another.
Le Café Gourmand explores how a café can become an expression of culture and creativity. Through its combination of French-inspired gastronomy, artistic details, and an intimate social atmosphere, the space offers a distinctive setting for everyday encounters—an atelier where taste extends beyond the plate.
The project was featured in Indonesia Design Magazine, in the 2014 Collection Edition — Restaurant, documenting its place within the publication's restaurant design selection.
